Tarryn Love x The Blak Infinite x RISING

The folks at RISING invited our studio to breathe animated life into the beautiful work of Gunditjmara Keerray Woorroong artist, Tarryn Love. Together, we would create an immersive nighttime projection as part of the The Blak Infinite program, hosted in the heart of Naarm, at Federation Square – a central feature of RISING’s 2024 festival.

To better understand the story Tarryn was telling, we hosted a creative workshop at our studio here on Gadigal Country – we were joined by artist Tarryn Love and The Blak Infinite co-curator Kate Tan Buuren. Studio Gilay helped to structure the narrative and discuss space and movement of the striking designs. Together, we covered a lot of ground – from family, story, style and site-specifics – we wanted to make sure all things were considered! Titled ngaka (‘look here’), the piece begins with the Milky Way, the river in the sky, and then follows Kooyang the eel, ancestors and eel traps. The architecture and the animated designs create a powerful experience for the huge crowds that have been attending this part of the festival.

ngaka is projected nightly against the ACMI, SBS and the Koori Heritage Trust buildings in Federation Square during the RISING Festival 1 – 16 June.
