SLNSW 200th Anniversary
In 2026, The State Library of NSW celebrate their 200th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, they requested Studio Gilay create two distinct animations that speak to two different ideas –
-
A film which interprets the history of the Mitchell Library building, acknowledging it’s 7-story wound deep into Country as the foundation of the Library’s sandstone construction.
- A film which responds to the ‘unfinished’ Dutch map that is built into the marble floor of the Mitchell Vestibule.
We were fortunate to work with Dharawal artist, Shane Youngberry on the Tasman Map animation and Yuin artist, Josh Paton on music compositions for both.
These works reflect on the Library’s physical and cultural presence on Gadigal land, and invite visitors to see the space not just as a repository of books, but as a site of continuous Aboriginal history, knowledge and presence. Both animations, Mitchell Library and Tasman Map are displayed prominently in the foyer of the Mitchell Library.
