Wangka Walytja Project and Exhibition

Studio Gilay and The University of Queensland joined forces to bring the Papunya Literature Production Centre’s archive of bi-lingual publications into a digital realm for a touring national exhibition.

Our studio animated three illustrated books from the PLPC archive, partnered with The Art Gallery of New South Wales to conduct digital animation workshops in Papunya and finally, to design two touch-tables to accompany the touring exhibition.

We animated the stories and illustrations of Sabrina Ferguson, Dennis Kulata Nelson, Abraham Stockman Tjungarrayi and Charlotte Phillipus Napurrula. We also extracted their illustrations for use by local community in the digital workshops. The animations and workshop outputs can be seen – along with many other wonderful resources from the Papunya community – in the touch-tables we created with the help of Rene Christian at Junior Major.

You can read this ABC article about the Wangka Walytja project and exhibition.
